Visual Arts Festival Damascus

curated by

Charlotte Bank & Delphine Leccas

The Visual Arts’ Festival Damascus is organized by AIN and was launched in October 2010 as an independent artistic event with a program of exhibitions, screenings, multi-media performances, lectures and talks. The aim of the festival is to create a forum for meetings and discussions focused on contemporary visual practice in the Middle East in dialogue with other regions of the world and to facilitate exchange between young artists from Syria and the neighbouring Arab countries.

After its successful launch in 2010, the next edition of the festival was planned for autumn 2012. However, throughout the year 2011 it soon became clear that it would be impossible to arrange this kind of event in Damascus. But instead of cancelling the event, we decided to give the festival a new format and turn it into a nomadic event and ccoperate with a hosting institution for each new edition. This way, we want to continue to work according to the aims of the festival as stated above.
